Complaint Process

The Office of the Colorado State Public Defender strives to provide competent legal representation to all clients assigned by the Court.  If you are a current Public Defender client and have a complaint or concern about your attorney, please follow these steps:

  1. First, discuss your complaint or concern directly with your current attorney.  It is best to communicate with your assigned attorney and work together to resolve your concerns.  Please keep in mind that the Public Defender will not assign a new attorney to your case due to a personality conflict.  It is important for you to attempt to work with the attorney that has been assigned to your case.
  2. Second, if you are unable to resolve your complaint or concern directly with your appointed attorney, ask to speak to their supervising attorney.  It may be helpful to put your issues in writing so a record is created of your concerns.  The supervising attorney has direct access to your assigned attorney and your case file and is in the best position to assist you.
  3. Third, in the rare circumstance where you are unable to resolve your issues with the supervising attorney you can send your complaint or concerns, in writing by letter or email, to the Colorado State Public Defender, Megan A. Ring.  Upon receipt of your written complaint, we will look into your concerns and contact you with a response as soon as is practicable.
